Winnipeg Police are reporting the fifth (5th) murder in the month of April after a domestic dispute took the life of a twenty-five (25) year old man.

On April 30, 2014, at approximately 3:40 am, EMS personnel responded to a residence in the 1300 block of Elgin Ave West regarding a male stabbed requiring assistance.

On arrival, the male was located and transported to Hospital in critical condition.  He subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

The victim was identified as Adrian Acoby (25) of Winnipeg.

The investigation revealed the victim had become involved in a domestic dispute that escalated to the point that a twenty (20) year old female produced a knife and allegedly stabbed the him.

Members of the WPS Homicide Unit investigated and subsequently charged Galena Flett (20) with second degree murder in connection with the incident.

Flett was detained at the Provincial Remand Center.

INSIDER COMMENTARY:

This tragic news comes only days after Winnipeg Police Board Chair, City Councillor Scott Fielding posted a tweet on Twitter celebrating crime statistics that reflect significant percentage decreases in violent crime and homicide in the City of Winnipeg.

The Police Insider challenged Fielding’s optimism in an Insider story called “Winnipeg Politico – Puts the “Spin” in “Spin Doctor.”

The story highlighted two Winnipeg realities Mr Fielding seemed happy to ignore.  1) April had been a deadly month in Winnipeg after four (4) murders had been reported.  2) Winnipeg set a record for homicides just over two short years ago after forty-one (41) killings were reported in 2011.

Can our memories really be that short?

Now that the fifth (5th) murder has been reported for the month of April I respectfully suggest we temper our optimism.

In fact, I’m not sure if the WPS has ever recorded five (5) or more murder in the month of April.  See factoids below…

Enquiries were sent to the WPS PIO office seeking clarification.
