On January 19, 2014 at 3:00 p.m., WPS officers and other emergency personnel responded to a residence in the 200 block of Andrews Street regarding an injured male.

Upon arrival Police located a deceased male victim identified as Justin Desmarais (24) years.  The cause of death was determined to be the result of blunt force trauma to the upper body.

Police indicated they believed Desmarais was involved in an altercation within the residence which is a nefarious location known for illicit drug activities.

The WPS Homicide Unit continued the investigation.

On January 27, 2014, Police announced they identified Justin Atelard Catcheway (30) as a suspect in the killing.  Police further reported they obtained a Canada wide arrest warrant for 2nd Degree Murder for his arrest.

On Thursday, March 13, 2014, Police issued a follow-up press release indicating they were still on the hunt for Catcheway who was eluding capture.  Police also reported Catcheway was believed to be an associate of the Manitoba Warriors street gang.

Police appealed to the public for information regarding Catcheway’s whereabouts at this time.

On March 28, 2014, Catcheway was arrested without incident in the 400 block of Kennedy Street by members of the WPS Tactical Support Team.

He was subsequently detained at the Provincial Remand Center.

Desmarais was the first Homicide victim in Winnipeg this year.

There have been three (3) murders recorded in Winnipeg so far this year.  All three killings have been solved.
