On Sunday, April 26, 2015, the Winnipeg Police Service announced the WPS Homicide Unit was involved in the investigation of two (2) killings that occurred on Saturday, April 25, 2015.
- The first killing occurred at 12:45 am when a deceased man was located at the rear of 329 Hargrave Street.
- The second killing occurred shortly after 6:30 pm, when a deceased man was located at the rear of 333 Portage Ave.
Police indicate the killings appear to be related and that one suspect is believed to be responsible for both incidents.
Police also warned, “Those in our homeless community or that frequent the streets to use caution, avoid secluded areas and, if at all possible, walk with others.”
Autopsies and family notifications are pending.
No further information was released.
These killings represent the 7th and 8th homicides recorded in Winnipeg this year and the 5th killing in the month of April.
Winnipeg recorded a total of 5 killings in the month of April in 2014.
By April 25, 2014, Winnipeg had recorded a total of 7 homicides.
The year ended with a total of twenty-five (25) killings.
The circumstances surrounding these killings are highly unusual in that the killings appear to be targeted and serial in nature.
The killings are reminiscent of the July 29, 2001 murder of Raymond Williams, a homeless solvent abuser who was shot to death in a random killing in the area of the Bell Hotel on Main Street.
Several theories regarding the killing evolved, one of which included the possibility the motive may have been connected to some form of street gang initiation.
The murder remains unsolved.
Williams was the 7th homicide victim reported in 2001.
