Members of the Winnipeg Police Service are being “run ragged” according to reports quoting Winnipeg Police Association President Maurice Sabourin.

Sabourin was responding to questions posed by media regarding an apparent surge in homicides this year.

It seems police are in the midst of investigating the 10th killing of the year, and the 5th in the month of March.

(Some media reports are erroneously reporting there have been 6 killings in the month of March.)

On March 18, 2019, the WPS issued a news release reporting the tragic news;

WPS Press Release

On March 17, 2019, at approximately 7 p.m., emergency services personnel were dispatched to the report of a male assaulted in the 400 block of Langside Street.

“Nothing is really particularly similar that would say, ‘This is leading to an increase in homicides this year. We can’t say this is attributed to any one thing because they are all very different in nature.”

On arrival, an adult male was located and subsequently rushed to hospital in critical condition.

The man has since died from his injuries.

When questioned by the press, WPS Public Information Officer Constable Tammy Skrabek indicated:

“Nothing is really particularly similar that would say, ‘This is leading to an increase in homicides this year. We can’t say this is attributed to any one thing because they are all very different in nature.”

Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit are investigating and are asking anyone with information that might advance the investigation to call 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.

Insider Commentary;

As reported, the man killed in this incident represents the 10th reported homicide victim in the City of Winnipeg this year.

(The three (3) most recent cases have yet to be solved.)

In 2018, the 10th homicide of the year was reported on July 11 – a full 116 days later than the current year. The year ended with a total of 22 homicides.

In 2017, the 10th homicide of the year was reported on May 23 – a total of 67 days later than the current year. The year ended with a total of 23 homicides.

In 2011, the WPS investigated a record 41 homicide cases.

In 2011, the 10th homicide of the year was recorded on April 20th – a total of 34 days later than the current year.

It would seem concerns regarding a record homicide year may be valid.
