On October 30, 2013 at approximately 8:00 a.m., police and other emergency personnel responded to the 400 block of King Street to check on the well-being of an individual who had been observed in the area.
Upon arrival a deceased male was located.
Police subsequently identified the victim as Jamie Cook (23) years of Winnipeg.
Members of the Homicide Unit conducted the investigation which led to the identification of three (3) suspects who were believed to be responsible for the killing.
Police advise the victim and the three (3) suspects met earlier in the evening and attended a residence associated to one of the suspects to socialize. At some point the suspects became upset with the victim and proceeded to physically assault him causing the injuries that ultimately led to his death.
Police have charged the following suspects with 2nd Degree Murder;
- Lyle James Lester Letandre (19)
- Aaron Freedom Bluestar Meekis (27)
- Kelvin Edwin George Orvis (27)
All three men were detained at the Provincial Remand Center.
In cases where multiple offenders are charged in murder evidence must exist that all three (3) individuals participated in the attack that led to the victim’s death.
It’s common in these cases for defense attorneys to attempt to enter plea bargain agreements for offenders who may have had less involvement than either one or both of his co-accused offenders.
It’s also common for offenders to attempt to have charges dropped in exchange for testimony that implicates the other accused persons.
In cases where evidence is thin the Crown must give serious consideration to these types of agreements to secure any hope of a conviction.
