On Saturday, June 30, 2018, the Winnipeg Police Service issued a press release announcing charges in a recent Corydon Avenue homicide.
On May 29, 2018, at approximately 12:40 a.m., emergency services were dispatched to the report of shots fired in the vicinity of Bar Italia at 737 Corydon Avenue.
Upon arrival, Tactical Team officers located a 37-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
The female victim was transported to hospital in stable condition.
The male victim was transported to hospital in critical condition.
On May 30, 2018, the man died from his injuries.
The victim was subsequently identified as Noel (Ramirez) Talingdan (37) of Winnipeg.
On June 29, 2018, the WPS announced the arrest of a suspect identified as Eric John Boyle (30) who was charged with the following offences;
- 1st-degree murder
- Attempt murder
- Assault cause bodily harm
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon knowing possession is unauthorized x 2
- Possession contrary to order x 2
- Unsafe storage
- Fail to comply with conditions of recognizance
- Possess proceeds of crime
- Possession of Methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking
Boyle was detained in custody.
Police also announced an arrest warrant has been issued for Joshua Lucien Peter Turner (24) for 1st-degree murder & attempt murder in connection with the investigation.
Police say Turner is approximately 5’10” tall and weighs 160 pounds.
He is not to be approached.
Police are asking anyone with information regarding Turner’s whereabouts to call investigators at (204) 986-6508, 911, or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
Police would not confirm if Talingdan’s murder was organized crime, gang or drug-related.
Talingdan was the eight (8th) reported homicide victim of the year.
To date, the WPS Homicide Unit has investigated a total of 9 homicide cases.
All 9 cases have now been solved.
August 14, 2018
Police issue press release indicating Turner was arrested by Tactical Team members on August 13, 2018 at 4:30 p.m., in the 400 block of Balmoral Street.
Turner was charged with;
- 1st-degree murder
- Attempt Murder Using a Firearm
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order x 2
He was detained in custody.
The Corydon Street neighborhood where Bar Italia can be found has been the scene of at least one other violent incident in the recent past.
On January 7, 2018, at approximately 1:05 a.m., WPS Officers responded to a report of a stabbing in the immediate vicinity of Bar Italia. Upon arrival police located two men who had both been stabbed. The men were transported to the hospital in critical condition but subsequently recovered from their injuries.
On March 2, 2018, the WPS requested the public’s assistance in identifying images obtained of the suspects.
Police say the response from the public assisted the investigation and resulted in the charges of aggravated assault x 2 against four men identified as;
- Jeffery Catacutan (27)
- Justin Tyler Frank (29)
- Simon La (22)
- Jonclemon Librea (22)
All four men were detained in custody.
The arrests were reported on June 29, 2018.
Historical Homicide @ Bar Italia
On July 28, 2010, a Bar Italia bouncer identified as Nicholas Garret Somers was charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of bar patron Gary Rent.
A jury subsequently found Somers not guilty after trial.
