On Saturday, May 14, 2016, Police issued a media release naming the men accused of a recent West End homicide.
On May 12, 2016, at approximately 6:30 pm, emergency services personnel responded to the 600 block of Wellington Ave regarding the report of a shooting.
Upon arrival, EMS responders located a man suffering a gunshot wound to the upper body.
The victim was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced deceased.
He was subsequently identified as George Prieston (29) of Winnipeg.
(Police advised a dog belonging to Prieston was also shot and killed during the incident.)
Witnesses to the incident reported a military-style assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine was used in the incident.
Patrol Officers responding to the call located a number of suspects in the area. Two (2) of the suspects have been identified as:
- Raymond Ducharme (25) years of Winnipeg
- Shawn Poitra (25) years of Winnipeg
Both men have been charged with;
- First Degree Murder
- Fail to Comply with Recognizance x 2
- Cruelty to Animals
Ducharme and Poitra were detained in custody.
Police have not released an official cause of death.
The firearm used in the murder has not been recovered.
Prieston was the 11th reported homicide victim in Winnipeg this year.
Police sources indicated the killing may have been gang related.
(Manitoba Warriors gang tags were observed on a building in the vicinity of the murder.)
Police have not made comment regarding the motive for the shooting however, WPS Public Information Officer Constable Rob Carver did indicate, “I can confirm that both accused have gang affiliations.”
Police sources advised Detectives are still looking for an additional suspect (s) in the case.
The WPS Homicide Unit has solved all but one case so far this year – solvency rate = 90.9%
