RCMP INVESTIGATING ISLAND LAKE HOMICIDE

On May 29, 2013, just after 4:00 am, Island Lake RCMP received a report of a deceased male on the main road in Wasagamack First Nation.  Witness reports and evidence collected at the scene indicated the man had been struck by a vehicle.

The victim was identified as Leevan Johnson Harper (19) from Wasagamack First Nation.  The cause of death is pending autopsy which will take place in the City of Winnipeg.

RCMP investigation resulted in the arrest of Trevor Ronnie Knott (18) who has been charged with Second Degree Murder regarding the incident.  Knott remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Winnipeg in Provincial Court on Friday, May 31, 2013.

RCMP indicate the victim and accused were known to each other and were socializing before the incident.  Knott is presumed innocent.

The Island Lake RCMP, RCMP Major Crimes Services, RCMP Forensic Identification Section and the RCMP Traffic Collision Analyst continue to investigate.

Wasagamack is located 610 kilometers Northeast of Winnipeg.  The community is accessible by plane and boat in the summer and by winter road in the winter.  The registered population is 1,423 persons who live on 18,400 acres of land. (Source – Wasagamack First Nation Website.)

The Wasagamack incident is the fourteenth (14th) reported Homicide investigated by the RCMP this year.

The City of Winnipeg recorded its seventh (7th) and eighth (8th) Homicides on Friday, May 17, 2013 after the bodies of Natasha Jeffrey (37) and Ronald Dabreo (39) were discovered at a residence at 4317 Roblin Blvd in the peaceful suburb of Charleswood.  Seymour Lloyd Sharpe (44) stands charged with two (2) counts of Second Degree Murder in the killings.

In 2012, Winnipeg recorded its eighth Homicide on March 24.
