On October 14, 2013, after a two month investigation, RCMP Federal Serious Crime and Organized Crime Units seized 196 pounds of marihuana from an SUV travelling east on the Trans-Canada Highway in the RM of St Francois Xavier.
Two (2) men were arrested during the course of the investigation and were identified as:
- Tho Minh Nguyen (52) of Winnipeg
- Pat Dat Phan (39) of Winnipeg
Both men were charged with Possession of Cannabis Marihuana for the Purpose of Trafficking under the Controlled Drugs & Substances Act and were released from custody.
The men will appear in court on November 21, 2013.
Although the RCMP didn’t comment regarding the origin of the seized marihuana it likely came from the Province of British Columbia.
Marihuana production is a 6 billion dollar industry in British Columbia where more than 40% of all Canadian marihuana is grown. (Source: Wikipedia)
The size of the RCMP seizure is indicative of involvement of some form or faction of Organized Crime. The men arrested in the investigation were likely drug couriers being paid to make the risky drug run to an unknown City in Eastern Canada. The likely destination was a major urban center with a significant population like Toronto, Ontario.
Drug couriers who lose large drug shipments can find themselves in a world of trouble with the criminal organization incurring the loss. (It’s no easy task repaying a million dollar “loan.”)
The estimated street value of these drugs is calculated at $889,840.00.
1 Gram Marihuana = $10 Street Value
1 Pound Marihuana = 454 grams
196 Pounds Marihuana = 88,984 grams
88,984 Grams Marihuana x $10 = $889,840.00.
