On January 3, 2014, Steinbach RCMP, with assistance from the RCMP GIS and Interdiction Team, pulled over an east bound semi-trailer travelling through the Steinbach area.
A search of the trailer subsequently resulted in Police locating approximately 114 pounds of cannabis marihuana. Two male suspects were located in the vehicle and were arrested.
As a result of the investigation, RCMP Officers charged John Millen (48) of British Columbia and John Shannon (51) of Alberta with Possession of Cannabis Marihuana for the Purpose of Trafficking. Both men were to appear in court in Winnipeg on January 6, 2014.
The RCMP indicates the semi-trailer was destined for eastern Canada.
The estimated street value of the noted seizure is approximately $517,560 dollars.
Although the RCMP didn’t comment regarding the origin of the seized marihuana it likely came from the Province of British Columbia.
Marihuana production is a 6 billion dollar industry in British Columbia where more than 40% of all Canadian marihuana is grown. (Source: Wikipedia)
The size of the RCMP seizure is indicative of involvement of some form or faction of Organized Crime. The men arrested in the investigation were likely drug couriers being paid to make the risky drug run to an unknown City in Eastern Canada. The likely destination was a major urban center with a significant population like Toronto, Ontario.
Drug couriers who lose large drug shipments can find themselves in a world of trouble with the criminal organization incurring the loss.
