Westwood Deaths Attributed to Domestic Violence – Police

It seems domestic violence may be behind the deaths of two men discovered in their Westwood home last evening.

On August 7, 2018, Winnipeg Police patrol officers responded to a home in the 100 block of Wordsworth Way to check the well-being of a resident.

On arrival, the officers located the bodies of two deceased adult men.

Detectives from the WPS Homicide Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation and indicate the incident appears to be domestic in nature.

“We’re fairly confident that were not looking for any outstanding suspects,” WPS PIO Constable Rob Carver said during a press conference. “There’s no ongoing risk to the public.”

Although his comments were suggestive of a murder-suicide scenario, Carver exercised caution during the media release;

“It’s not a homicide investigation until we confirm its a homicide investigation by forensics and an autopsy.”

The cause of death will not be known until the results of the autopsy are disclosed.

The identities of the deceased men have not been released.

Carver indicated investigators were looking to speak with anyone who may be able to provide additional information that might assist the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508.

Insider Commentary

Assuming this is a case of murder-suicide, the victim in this matter will be recorded as the 12th homicide victim of the year.

At this time last year, police had investigated a total of 18 homicide cases.

On May 21, 2018, police located the bodies of a deceased man and woman at a residence in the 600 block of Buckingham Road in Charleswood.

Police subsequently issued a press release indicating;

“Investigators have determined the incident was domestic related and the female had been assaulted, sustaining upper-body injuries, prior to her death. The male’s injuries were found to be self-inflicted.”

Police spokesperson Constable Tammy Skrabek indicated the couple had been married for approximately 30 years but had recently separated.

While domestic-related homicide is not rare, domestic-related murder-suicide is not something police frequently investigate.

That makes 2018 somewhat of an anomaly.

In 2015, Camille Runke was shot to death by her estranged husband who later committed suicide as the police closed in to make the arrest.

Runke had been granted a protection order earlier in the year.

Domestic Violence on the Rise

In the recently released WPS 2017 Annual Statistical Report domestic violence took the top spot in the Top 5 Citizen Generated Dispatched Event category.

In 2017, members of the WPS responded to 16,332 domestic disturbance events.

In 2016, WPS officers responded to 16,104 domestic disturbance events.

In 2015, WPS officers responded to 15,055 domestic disturbance events.

The trend is troubling.
