Registration is now open for the 10th Anniversary WPS Half Marathon scheduled to run on May 4, 2014.
Race organizers are celebrating this special milestone and hope to push the Cops for Cancer charitable fundraising efforts over the $1,000,000 mark. All proceeds are donated to the Manitoba Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. Recent race events have raised funds north of $100,000.
Last year nearly 3,000 runners enjoyed ideal conditions with picture perfect clear blue Manitoba skies and temperatures hovering around the +4° C mark.
The WPS half marathons inaugural race took place in May of 2005 after a dedicated group of Police Officers and civilians put their heads together and decided to “be the difference.” The premiere race took thirteen (13) committee members over six (6) months of hard-core planning and organizing. Over one hundred (100) volunteers donated their time to support organizers on race day.
Race planners initially hoped the race would attract around two-hundred (200) runners to “break even.” Five weeks before the race, organizers stopped accepting registrations as over one thousand (1,000) participants had registered.
In 2005, a total of $37,000 was raised and donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Since that time the WPS Marathon has continued to grow and evolve into one of the most anticipated, highly organized races of its kind.
This year, the Canadian Cancer Society is holding a contest that provides runners a chance to win two (2) round trip flights to take part in any race in Canada or the continental United States. The prize package is valued at a maximum of $3,000.
Race participants can register at The Running Room.
See you on race day!
