In serious assault cases such as these, where a victim is critically injured but clings to live, offenders are often cautioned that their charges may be upgraded to Murder or some similar offence in the event the victim succumbs to his or her injuries.
These cases are often investigated by the Major Crimes Unit or District Detectives due to the significant case load Homicide Investigators continue to work.
The reality is, if death is not imminent, the Homicide Unit often defers the case to another investigative entity.
