Assault Morphs into Manslaughter – Homicide #26

On August 16, 2019, at approximately 5:20 p.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to the area of Tylehurst Street and Wolseley Avenue West regarding the report of an unresponsive man who had been assaulted earlier.

On arrival, the injured man, in this thirties, was transported to hospital in critical condition.

A suspect was taken into custody and members of the Homicide Unit, working alongside members of the Major Crimes Unit, continued the investigation. Police indicated they believed the suspect and victim were known to each other and that they became involved in a dispute which escalated to a serious assault.

Police subsequently charged Alexander Agnus McPherson (29) with aggravated assault.

McPherson was detained in custody.

In the media release, police indicated the victim had succumbed to his injuries and the investigation was ongoing.

The Public Information Office indicated an autopsy would be required to determine the victim’s cause of death.

On Tuesday, August 20, 2019, the WPS issued a press release indicating the charges against McPherson had been upgraded to manslaughter.

The victim has not been formally identified, nor has the cause of death or motive for the attack been reported.
