The victim was identified as Walter Lavasseur (56) of Winnipeg.
Evidence at the scene suggested Lavasseur had been the victim of an assault.
Police report a suspect was arrested at the scene.
Members of the WPS Homicide Unit continued the investigation and learned the victim and another resident of the Hotel had been involved in a physical altercation during the early morning hours of October 11, 2015.
The victim was left in his room where he died and remained undiscovered for two days.
The suspect was originally charged with Aggravated Assault due to his alleged involvement and was detained in custody.
He was identified as James Michael Jarrow (45) of Winnipeg.
On October 14, 2015, an autopsy was completed, however, Police have not released the cause of death or any specifics regarding the nature of the victim’s injuries.
On October 15, 2015, after consultation with Manitoba Justice, Jarrow’s charges were raised to 2nd Degree Murder.
He was processed on the upgraded charges and returned to custody.
Lavasseur is the 19th reported homicide victim in Winnipeg in 2015.
All but two (2) of this years homicides have been solved.

Winnipeg recorded a total of 25 homicides in 2014 and 2013.
The last time the City of Winnipeg recorded the 19th homicide this late in the year was 2010 when the 19th killing was recorded on October 10 – the year ended with a total of 22 homicides.
Several homicides investigated in 2010 were gang related – infact 5 of the 22 killings recorded that year remain unsolved. All of the unsolved killings are believed to be gang related.

- May 25, 2010 – Kyle Earl (16) gunned down on Toronto St
- October 10, 2010 – Tiffany Johnston (21) shot to death on Selkirk Ave
- October 23, 2010 – Thomas Beardy (35) & Ian McDonald (52) shot and killed in what police believe were gang related – connected events.
- November 1, 2010 – Daniel Kachkan (34) long time gang member, shot and killed execution style in his residence.
*WPS Homicide investigators still believe several of these killings will be solved.
