On Thursday, July 28, 2016, the Winnipeg Police Service issued a media release seeking the public’s assistance identifying a second suspect in the downtown murder of Cyril Quentin Weenusk (26) of Oxford House, Manitoba.
Police investigators believe the victim had an altercation with a group of people in the area of Portage Avenue and Donald Street on July 5, 2016.
That altercation turned violent and proved deadly.
Weenusk was transported to hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.
Police did not release a cause of death but evidence at the scene suggests he died of blunt force trauma.
Weenusk was the 14th reported homicide victim in Winnipeg this year.
He was the father of four (4) young boys.
Media reports indicated Weenusk travelled to Winnipeg to provide a medical escort for his father who is fighting cancer.
On July 15, 2016, WPS Homicide investigators arrested an alleged suspect identified as Geordie Douglas Wood (22) of St. Theresa Point, Manitoba.
Wood was charged with 2nd degree murder and was remanded into custody.
Homicide investigators are now seeking to identify a second suspect who is believed to have participated in the killing.
Police have obtained a court order authorizing the release of images of the suspect as he appears to be a young offender.
(The court order authorizing the release of the suspect’s image expires on July 31, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. Media outlets are prohibited from publishing the images after that time.)
The suspect is seen wearing a black and white coloured camo-style jacket, a white t-shirt and a dark coloured baseball hat.
This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact detectives at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
