Member of the Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit are thanking the Ontario Provincial Police today for putting handcuffs on a suspect for them in the City’s latest homicide.
On April 15, 2019 at 11:10 p.m., emergency personnel responded to the Ramallah Cafe located at 325 Pembina Highway regarding the report of a stabbing.
Upon arrival, police located two (2) men suffering from serious stab wounds.
One of the men was rushed to hospital in critical condition and subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
The second man was rushed to hospital in critical unstable condition where he remains.
The deceased man has now been identified as Yazan Alhorani (20) of Winnipeg.
Police say the investigation revealed a dispute inside the establishment escalated into a physical confrontation that resulted in the two men being stabbed.
On April 16, 2019 at approximately 3:15 p.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police stopped an eastbound vehicle on Highway 17A east of Kenora and placed a male suspect under arrest.
The suspect was subsequently turned over to WPS investigators and returned to Winnipeg.
Police identified the alleged killer as Mahfuthmm Assi (20) of Winnipeg.
Assi was charged with;
- 2nd degree murder
- Attempt to commit murder
Assi was detained in custody.
Alhorani is the twelfth (12th) reported homicide victim of the year.
Police have solved 9 of the 12 reported homicide cases this year – solvency rate 75%.
In 2018, the 12th homicide of the year was recorded on August 7th.
In 2017, the 12th homicide of the year was recorded on June 18th.
In 2011, the City of Winnipeg recorded a record 41 homicide cases.
That year, the 12th homicide of the year was recorded on May 10th.
