A Winnipeg arson investigation that claimed the life of a man in his 60’s has now morphed into a homicide case.
On June 1, 2019, at approximately 10:50 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service and Winnipeg Fire & Paramedics Service, responded to a residence in the 500 block of Manitoba Avenue regarding the report of a fire.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel encountered heavy flames and smoke from the residence.
Police indicate two (2) occupants of the home managed to escape the residence prior to arrival of emergency services.
One occupant was assessed by Paramedics and rushed to hospital in stable condition.
A deceased man was located within the dwelling.
The victim has been identified as Hubert Wilson McKay (63) of Winnipeg.
Police say the fire is now being investigated as a homicide.

Police issue a news release indicating a suspect has been charged in this case.
The suspect has been identified as William Joseph Campbell (34) of Winnipeg.
Campbell has been charged with;
- 2nd degree murder
- arson with disregard for human life
He was detained in custody.
In 2018, the 21st homicide of the year was recorded on the 17th day of December.
In 2011, the City of Winnipeg recorded a record 41 homicide cases.
In 2011, the 21st homicide of the year was recorded on the 16th day of July.
(On July 16, 2011 – the WPS investigated the arson related homicide of five people that included 4 men and 1 woman ranging in ages from 22 – 56. While this incident had a dramatic impact on the homicide statistics, 2011 would have been a record year for homicide regardless.)
